In the pioneer days latrines were dug for human waste and, since the wash was done outside anyway, graywater was just tossed out into the front yard. In addition animals were butchered and the waste parts buried so that nature was the sewage disposal system. Although many parts of this tradition included exposure to harmful bacteria the land around the home quickly absorbed the waste and turned it into compost neutralizing this threat.
